Rolling Stones tribute band to fill Saturday slot

Centreville, Mich. —

The fill-in entertainment for Kellie Pickler is from a musical genre not typically found at the St. Joseph County Grange Fair.
But the price of admission is tough to beat.
A special meeting of the fair board Friday brought a decision to bring in Satisfaction: An International Rolling Stones Show.
The Rolling Stones tribute band will perform starting at 7 p.m. Sept. 25, the final night of the fair.
The replacement band was sought after Pickler announced two weeks ago that she would be honoring her contract to open for Rascal Flatts. At the time Pickler was booked in January, Rascal Flatts was not scheduled to be on tour. Rascal Flatts had to modify its fall tour schedule and will be in Florida the night Pickler was supposed to perform in Centreville.
The same commitment to Rascal Flatts also resulted in the cancellation of a performance by Chris Young, the opening act for George Jones. The fair is issuing refunds for both concerts.
Bill Johnson, manager of the St. Joseph County Grange Fair, said a number of different options were discussed at Friday’s meeting. There was even a suggestion that the fair consider not bringing in a closing-night act at all.
Johnson said the fair won’t make money on free admission to the performance, but the curiosity factor of a tribute band might bring a few more people to the fair than if the stage had been left dark for the night.
“If we get some people coming in because of the show, then that’s a little bit we’ll get back at the gate,” Johnson said. “But the original acts we had to choose from, they just weren’t performers that we feel would draw much interest … there’s a reason why they’re still available this late in the game.”

Kellie Pickler: ‘I’ve Gotta Quit Beer & Fries’

Kellie Pickler fears she’s gained 12 pounds, but she has a plan to get herself back into her slimmest shape just in time for her wedding to songwriter Kyle Jacobs.

“I look at pictures of myself,” the country cutie, 24, laughs to me during the CMA Music Festival held in Nashville last month. “I was looking back at the CMT Awards. My grandpa was in there on the couch, and I guess they were re-airing it on CMT. He had it on, and I went ‘oh s***, I have got to step away from the beer. The beer and the fries – I’ve gotta quit.’ You’ll see pictures of yourself, or you’ll put your clothes on, and you’ll be like ‘oh, my pants are too tight, I can’t breathe.’ You notice it. I’ve gotta start cutting back. That’s one reason I’m running on coffee today.”

Her biggest diet challenge is her eating pattern.

“My thing is I’m such a night owl that I’ll go through the day without eating much – hardly at all – and then at night, I’ll cram it everything in and then go to bed. That’s why I’ve gained probably 12 pounds this year.”

Despite the worry, Kellie has a confession.

“I really don’t workout,” she says. “I’m not an avid gym person. I mean, you can tell. I go through stages – like I’ll be good for a short time, and then I let myself go. Then, I try and pick up where I left off and get back in the gym. It’s just a lose-lose situation for me.”

But she fondly remembers hitting the gym.

“Whenever I am working out is when I feel the best, and I look the best,” she says. “I can tell. I know I need to – I’m lazy sometimes. You come in off the road, and the last thing you want to do is go to the gym – or go sweat. You want to sleep in your bed, relax and unwind. And cook. Have something that’s not road food. It does get hard on the road because you’re so much all over the place. You eat what’s there. It is what it is.”

Kellie Pickler, Chris Young Cancel Fair Dates to Join Rascal Flatts Tour

Kellie Pickler and Chris Young have canceled fair dates in September because both artists were double-committed to be a part of Rascal Flatts’ tour. Pickler was scheduled to perform in Centreville, Mich., at the St. Joseph Country Grange Fair Sept. 23, while Young was booked to open for George Jones there on Sept. 25. Jones is still scheduled to perform. Young also canceled fair appearances in Frederick, Md., on Sept. 24 and Kennesaw, Ga., on Sept. 25, because they coincided with a run of Rascal Flatts dates in Florida. Rascal Flatts’ next tour stop with Pickler and Young will be Thursday (July 29) in Virginia Beach, Va.

Pickler, Young pull out due to obligations on Rascal Flatts tour

Centreville, Mich. — Officials with the St. Joseph County Grange Fair learned a bit about the expression, “That’s show business.” Plans for singer Kellie Pickler to close out the fair’s seven-day run in September were thrown for a loop over the weekend.

The 24-year-old Pickler was forced to honor her contract to open for country trio Rascal Flatts. Fair Manager Bill Johnson on Wednesday said details of Pickler’s Sept. 25 performance were finalized in January. At the time, Rascal Flatts was not scheduled to be on tour in late September.

A second blow to the fair’s 2010 entertainment schedule was delivered when Chris Young, opening act for headliner George Jones, also canceled his performance because of the same agreement he has with Rascal Flatts as its second opening act.

Johnson said he understands Pickler had to honor her first obligation, and conceded she would ultimately benefit more from exposure to 20,000 fans a night opening for Rascal Flats than she would performing before 4,000 or so fans in Centreville.

The fair has spent about $10,000 in advertising to promote Pickler’s appearance and Johnson said he would be surprised if Pickler’s agency reimburses the amount.

It may not be much consolation for Johnson and Fair Board President Bill Younts, but Pickler’s and Young’s representatives indicated the two would perform in 2011 at the same cost they were to be paid for their September appearances. Johnson said he hopes they keep their word but he’s not holding his breath.

“Next year we wouldn’t be able to touch Kelly Pickler or Chris Young … they’ll be priced way out of our league,” Johnson said. “If they honor the rate we were giving (for the September shows), it’d be a bargain.”

Ironically, Johnson noted, Rascal Flatts was an opening act at the fair several years ago. Johnson did not indicate what the fair was to pay Pickler, saying only that it was a five-figure amount. Through Wednesday, about 950 tickets to Pickler’s show had been sold. Ticket prices ranged between $25 and $35 each.
Meanwhile, the fair has sold about 2,000 tickets to the Jones show. Johnson said Jones is willing to perform with or without an opening act. Still, Johnson said he’d like to secure some form of entertainment as an opener to give the fans a good ticket value.

The greater void to fill is Pickler’s spot, Johnson said, since he was targeted for the Saturday night slot. The last night of the fair typically draws its largest single-day crowd, which typically yields a number of walk-up sales as a result.
The fair board is staging a special meeting at 5:30 p.m. Friday and Johnson said a decision will be made regarding what to do about Pickler’s absence.
He said the talent available for that night, according to the fair’s purchasing agent, Variety Attractions, is either too weak or the wrong type of genre to complement the county fair theme.

He said consideration will be given to chuck wagon races, monster trucks, a classic rock group or a tribute band. He said the fair has a chance to nab a pair of tribute artists considered high-end quality that have toured worldwide, including a Neil Diamond tribute artist and a separate act that emulates the Rolling Stones.

“The tribute band idea … that’s a tough call,” Johnson said. “We’ve never done that, but do we take the risk?” With the fair is just two months away, a decision will have to be made at Friday’s special meeting, Johnson said. He expects an announcement to be made next week.

Johnson reiterated that there are no hard feelings between the fair and either Pickler or Young. He said booking high-profile acts for a county fair involves risk, and there is never a guarantee.
